Needs and Proposals

1. Shelter Housing and Toilets

Due to conflict situation prevailed more than three decades in the North 16,100 shelter houses had been damaged according to a survey carried out. A number of Assisting Agencies have been helping in reconstructing the shelter houses. 3,700 housing units including 990 partly damaged reconstructed up to now. Only few owners have reconstructed their houses. The damaged houses belong to vulnerable families are to be reconstructed with the help of assisting agencies. According to a survey carried out the families in the division need 3,575 toilets. The vulnerable families are to be provided with toilets with help of assisting agencies

2. Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Water Reservoirs and Channels

Agriculture both paddy cultivation and high land crops cultivation are the main economic activities in the division and these cultivations are mainly depending on the seasonal rainfall and the underground water resource. There are number of water reservoirs and channels in the division and most of them are abounded and for the recharging of underground water to the irrigation wells these reservoirs are to be renovated and rehabilitated.

 

3. Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Bunds to Prevent Intrusion of saline water

There were 14 bunds existing in the division to prevent intrusion of saline water and these had been damaged due to the conflict situation prevailed. New bunds had been erected for security reasons and these bunds affect the topography of the division and causes unwanted water stagnation. All these are to be renovated and rehabilitated for the promotion of agriculture endeavor.

 

4. Reconstruction of  UC Roads- ( “D” Class)

There are UC roads, nearly 230 Km are to be reconstructed since these are fully damaged and not reconstructed in the recent past. The commuters find it difficult in using these roads. The details can be obtained from the UC.

 

5. Construction of Fish Market ,Vegetable Open Market and Shopping Complexes

The present fish market was earmarked for parking private buses and three wheelers. The proposed fish market is to be located on Thanankilapu Road. The Vegetable open market is to be reconstructed for the convenient of buyers and sellers. The shopping complexes are to be constructed along Thanakilapu Road and on the Eastern side of the market area and on the western side of the area adjoining the bus stand.

 

6. Reconstruction of  PS Roads-( “D” Class)

There are PS roads, nearly 230 Km are to be reconstructed since these are fully damaged and not reconstructed in the recent past. The commuters find it difficult in using these roads. The details can be obtained from the PS.

 

7. Supply of Electricity

According to the policy of the present Government, the electricity supply to be extended to all the villages in the country. There are some villages in the division are not supplied with the electricity and the distance comes to 255 Km

 

8. Additional inclusion of “Samurdhi” families

At present there are small groups of families totaling 11,455 covered under the Samurdhi programme and 6,234 families are provided with stamps to obtain dried food items. The balance totaling 5,221 families are also to be provided with stamps.

 

9. Provision of livelihood assistance to vulnerable families

The vulnerable families in the division are to be provided with livelihood assistance to improve their livelihood activities and bring up their standard of living
